How to Get the Perfect Fit Every Time

When it comes to men’s fashion, nothing beats a well-tailored suit or garment that fits like a glove. The difference between off-the-rack clothes and tailored pieces is instantly noticeable — the way a jacket drapes, the length of the sleeves, and how the trousers fall can completely transform your look.

Start with the shoulders. This is the most important part of any jacket or blazer because altering shoulder seams is difficult and expensive. Make sure the shoulder pads end right at your natural shoulder bone without extending beyond it or looking tight.

Pay attention to sleeve and trouser length. Sleeves should show about half an inch of shirt cuff, and trousers should lightly brush your shoes without bunching up. Getting these lengths right creates a clean and polished silhouette.

Don’t be afraid to get creative with style. Classic tailoring isn’t just about navy and charcoal anymore. Experiment with different cuts — slim fit, double-breasted, or even a bit of structure with padding to broaden the shoulders. Also, think about the details: functional buttonholes on the sleeves (“surgeon’s cuffs”) or subtle lapel stitching can add personality.

Fit your body type. Tailoring should complement your natural shape. For example, if you have a slim build, a tapered waist and narrower lapels will enhance your silhouette. If you have a broader frame, opt for structured shoulders and a straight cut.

Consult your tailor often. Don’t wait until the end of the process to see if the fit is right. Schedule multiple fittings to ensure adjustments are perfect. Tailoring is an art, and your tailor is your artist — keep them involved.

By following these tips, you’ll not only look sharp but also feel confident knowing your clothes were made just for you.
